Excerpt
Excerpt: What is SAIL? Secure Automated Inspection Lanes (SAIL) is a joint program by the Transportation Security Administration (TSA), U.S. Coast Guard (USCG), and Golden Gate Ferry (GGF) to test explosives detection equipment for screening of passenger ferries. GGF is the first public transit ferry system in the U.S. selected by TSA for this testing. How does SAIL work? While the pilot program is in operation, 100 percent of ticketed passengers will be screened. However, screening operations may be temporarily suspended at any given time. Who will be screened? No. The entire process will take a few moments. Will I miss the ferry due to screening? Screening of passengers on the Larkspur to San Francisco route will initially begin in late August and continue through September 2005. Testing of the screening technology will begin with off peak trips but as experience is gained, screening of commuter trips will occur. The program will begin at Larkspur Terminal and may move to San Francisco Terminal later in the process. When will SAIL be used at GGF? TSA will use document scanning equipment to screen passengers for explosives. Table top explosives trace detection equipment may be used as additional screening.
