Reference

Reference as a category refers to works which you can refer to for confirmed facts. Reference works are usually referred to for particular pieces of information, rather than read beginning to end. The writing style used in these works is informative; the authors avoid use of the first person, and emphasize facts. Many reference works are compiled by a team of contributors whose work is coordinated by one or more editors rather than by an individual author. Indexes are commonly provided in many types of reference work. Reference works include dictionaries, thesauruses, encyclopedias, almanacs, bibliographies, and catalogs. Many reference works are available in electronic form and can be obtained as software packages or online through the Internet.

Pinch Like You Mean It! 101 Ways to Spend Less Money Now

By: Dr. Penny Pincher

I started writing this book on my cell phone on an airplane flight- with my phone in “airplane mode”, of course... While trapped in my seat for a couple hours I started typing a list of ways to spend less money and ended up with 101 tips. After I landed, I added some description, stories, and details to each tip to create a resource to help people spend less money. The tips on saving money in this book can be used to save money, of course, but they can also help you ...

Buying food at a convenience store is rarely a good idea, but if you do, here is a tip to avoid paying sales tax on food items. Back in college, I would sometimes get a "grinder" burrito at a convenience store, not a bad lunch for about $1.00. If you paid for the burrito before microwaving it, it was considered a grocery item and there was no sales tax. If you microwaved it first and then paid for it, you were charged 6% sales tax since it was considered a prepared fo...

Migration: The COMPAS Anthology

By: Bridget Anderson, Editor; Michael Keith, Editor

‘Migration’ is a difficult word. It encompasses multiple interlinked practices, policies and relationships, and it touches people all over the world in myriad ways. This anthology is designed both as a teaching and research resource and as a provocation. Contributions range from personal reflections to succinct overviews, and include poetry and images, posing questions and sharing insights on the multifaceted phenomenon that we call ‘migration’, and linking it to wider ...

"The arrogation of powers to keep people ‘in place’ – from historical regimes of serfdom, to contemporary measures to regulate movement, to modern city forms such as the hukou system in China – all define who is and who is not a migrant in relation to regional, national and municipal governance of scarce public goods and ideologies of nation or belonging."

A Guide to Systematic Readings in the Encyclopaedia Britannica

By: James Baldwin, Ph.D.

The Britannica is a work of reference, and much more: it is a collection of all histories, all biographies, all arts, all litterateurs, and all scientific, professional, and mechanical knowledge; but on account of its comprehensiveness, extending as it does through so many large volumes, it presents such an "embarrassment of riches" that those who consult it fail sometimes to discover all that is suited to their individual needs. It is evident, therefore, that if each re...
