In fiction, the adventurer figure or Picaro may be regarded as a descendant of the knight-errant of Medieval romance. Like the knight, the adventurer roams through episodic encounters, usually involving wealth, romance, or fighting. Unlike the knight, the adventurer was a realistic figure, often lower class or otherwise impoverished, who is forced to make his way to fortune, often by deceit. Also, an adventurer is a roguish hero of low social class who lives by his or her wits in a corrupt society.

1848, Kamehameha III granted fee-simple interest of Kalialinui to a chiefly steward, Kamaikaaloa (Kamaikaaloa), who held the land through the remainder of his lifetime, and subsequently conveyed it to his heirs. Kalalawalu—daughter of Kamaikaaloa and Kealohaaukai—and her husband, Douglas Panee, sold the land of Kalialinui to Haleakala Ranch in 1888. Most of Kalialinui, including the land that became the Waikamoi Preserve, has been held by Haleakala Ranch since that t...
The Hawaiian Language Reprint Series was established by the Hawaiian Historical Society to make available to students and scholars books that were printed in the Hawaiian language during the 19th and early 20th centuries. Most have long been out of print, and access to surviving editions is generally limited to libraries and private collections. We hope that making these texts accessible will foster the use and appreciation of the Hawaiian language, encourage the buildin...

Groundbreaking research began on a new scientific frontier, the first early experiments of attempting to establish communication with another species. Dr. Lilly's research has led to the discovery of the Dolphin's amazing ability to mimic certain human conversational sounds. Man and Dolphin catalogs the first early experimentation of interspecies communication between Man and Dolphin.
"Eventually it may be possible for humans to speak with another species. I have come to this conclusion after careful consideration of evidence gained through my research experiments with dolphins." - p21
This is both a descriptive and a prescriptive approach to the adult obesity epidemic in the United States. First, the book shows the origins of obesity and how it blew out of proportion to become a crisis in an era of advanced medicine. The books precisely describes the factors of obesity, which are multipronged: the food producers, government, the food marketing experts, the food distributors and the restaurants, and even the victims themselves: the obese. An analysis o...
Why are four out of ten people living in the United States obese? There may not be a specific and definite answer to this question, but no one can say they’re not aware of this epidemic. While most of us may allege different causes that drive obesity, we are all aware of what the culprit is. It’s, for the most part, the food. Bigger portions, poor and confusing diet, inactivity, you name it, it always comes down to the food we eat. Everything is big in America: cars, hou...

Agitalancia has no time for consistency or determined outcomes, at least those planned by human mortals. He frequently calls on saints and philosophers to support his own views, though to do so he is usually obliged to mangle or invert the meanings of the words he quotes. An example of his manipulation of philosophers occurs when he cites Epicurus: Recall the teachings of Epicurus, the philosopher whose reasoning is least tarnished by error,” directed Gregorio. “The firs...
As he spoke he beheld a light in the heavens and a glitter of lamps, but nothing else. His hearers were amazed at what had occurred. His usual caution left him and he walked out into the storm. When he returned, he was wearing a purple robe, tied with a golden girdle. He wore bronze slippers on his feet and a wreath of laurel crowned his head. He found there was a general consternation regarding his whereabouts. He bade them take no further trouble, for things beyond exp...

Away from the gang rivalry, politics, and bloodshed that prevailed in the main Chambal area, in one corner of the Chambal region itself, was a village named Robbers’ Hill. Kailash Pandey lived there. He was not educated, but he had learned how to read and write Hindi. Kidnapping for ransom was his profession. Since childhood, he has grown up...

“During my many trips around the world, I sometimes captured images of waters and skies, mostly in conjuction, and associated them with not very common English words – in an attempt to describe the instant feelings which the visual sceneries transmitted to me. In this photoabum, I amalgamated images from a trip to France and England made in May – July 2010, and from two trips to Central America (Panama, Costa Rica, Nicaragua in December 2010 - January 2011; and Dominica...
